Abstract

This chapter explores the critical role of gathering requirements and conducting a kick-off meeting to initiate a user research study. The process begins with a study request and prefilling a research protocol that outlines the study’s purpose, key stakeholders, participant profile, and game information. Then, a more structured kick-off meeting with the game development team takes place to clarify goals, whether they are business or game design decisions, or production risks. With goals defined, the focus shifts to assessing constraints, and defining the methods, required game assets, and deliverables in the form of reports, video recording, or playtest data. This chapter emphasizes proactive communication, practical planning, and thoughtful prioritization to avoid misalignment and ensure that the planned study delivers actionable insights. Content is illustrated with real-world examples to demonstrate how to navigate trade-offs and prepare research that effectively informs business, production, or game design decisions.
