Sustainability in Manufacturing
Abstract
The introduction of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) marks a transformative era in sustainable manufacturing, fostering a paradigm shift toward interconnected and intelligent industrial ecosystems. This chapter provides a comprehensive exploration of the applications and implications of IoT and IIoT in the context of sustainable manufacturing. This chapter starts with an introduction to the basic concepts and historical evolution of IoT and IIoT, which it explains to be critical toward increasing the efficiency, productivity, and innovation of modern manufacturing processes. The chapter explains and searches for the core technologies involved, such as sensor technologies, communication protocols, and cloud computing in IoT and IIoT and their roles in data collection, transmission, and analysis. Topics on the integration of IIoT into manufacturing, real-time monitoring and control systems, supply chain optimization, quality assurance, and even machine vision with predictive maintenance strategies and networking to edge computing are included. These discussion items will not miss on the issues of security within the IIoT ecosystems. Practical insights into real-life case studies to understand the benefits and lessons learned from successful deployments round off this chapter. Further discussion is also extended to the limitations toward the widespread deployment of IIoT and also addresses future directions: emerging trends and technologies, which will define next-generation sustainable manufacturing. In the final section of the chapter, key findings are synthesized based on the profound implications of IoT and IIoT for the future of sustainable manufacturing.
