Introduction to Ancient Roots of Steganography
Abstract
Steganography is the art and science of embedding secret data inside a cover file. This chapter will deliver an overview of the basics of steganography, including its definition, historical background, different types of techniques involved, and its applications. Unlike cryptography, steganography focuses on embedding secret information in cover files such as images, audio files, text, and video, without arousing suspicion in a third party. This feature makes it a valuable tool for hidden data transmission and protection. The history of steganography for ancient people showed that traditional techniques like invisible ink and embedded messages inside wax tablets were utilized. With the development of technology, modern steganography, also known as digital steganography, is used these days. Some steganography applications include copyright protection, digital forensics, hidden transmission of messages in cybersecurity, and many more. Understanding the basic concepts of steganography is essential for experts, security professionals, and hackers to properly utilize hidden communication and mitigate potential threats while leveraging its abilities for legitimate purposes.
