Abstract

As digital multimedia content is shared over networks, it has become more important to protect authenticity, copyright, privacy, and information integrity. The problem of ownership tracing, tampering detection, and tracking multimedia files can be solved using digital watermarking, which conceals additional information inside files. In this chapter, a broad overview of digital watermarking techniques is provided. These techniques are split into spatial and transform domains. Their performance is evaluated based on approach, payload capacity, level of robustness, and invisibility. A detailed discussion of Least Significant Bit (LSB), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), and hybrid models is provided in this chapter. The challenges of the watermarking techniques are explored along with future directions and emerging trends. In the future, integration of blockchain in watermarking, machine-learning-based watermarking, and reversible watermarking can be explored for more security.
