Abstract

Polymers play a pivotal role in nanoparticle formulation by providing structural stability, controlled-release properties, and biocompatibility. Polymers can be tailored to exhibit specific release profiles, such as sustained release, pulsatile release, or triggered release in response to environmental stimuli or physiological conditions. Moreover, polymers contribute to the stability of nanoparticles, protecting encapsulated drugs from degradation and premature release. Biodegradable polymers are particularly advantageous, as they can undergo gradual degradation, releasing the drug payload in a controlled manner and reducing the risk of accumulation in the body. These polymers are often used in the design of long-acting or sustained-release formulations for the treatment of chronic conditions. Overall, the role of polymers in nanoparticles for controlled drug delivery is multifaceted, encompassing modulation of drug release, enhancement of stability, biocompatibility, and targeted delivery, making them invaluable components in advancing therapeutic interventions. This chapter explores the significance of polymers in designing and developing nanoparticles for controlled drug delivery applications.
