Abstract

For a long time, specialized markets were dominated by men. But due to shifting attitudes and education, among other factors, the landscape is slowly changing. There is an increase in women’s participation in entrepreneurship globally. However, even with the rising women entrepreneurship, their presence in the specialized markets remains uneven. Entry into the specialized markets is still a hurdle. This chapter examines the experiences of women entrepreneurs in specialized industries. In doing so, it will identify specific characteristics that differentiate specialized markets from mainstream markets; examine the key challenges women entrepreneurs face in navigating specialized markets; explore strategies needed for women to thrive in specialized markets, and lastly, highlight the unique strengths women entrepreneurs bring into the specialized markets. Drawing on empirical literature, the chapter will examine how women entrepreneurs have overcome the challenges when it comes to navigating specialized markets.
