Abstract

The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has largely evolved since the World Conference on Sampling and Blending was created in 2003. Numerous authors have brought their own varying definitions to many fundamental terms, and notations have not always been consistent. Because the right word sometimes does not exist in current sampling practice, or because various authors may disagree on the selection of such words and symbols, it is essential to write this chapter at the beginning of the book to facilitate the necessary work so kindly offered by many talented participants. Because specific notations are frequently associated with basic terms, it is natural to define them as well.
