Abstract

The selection of an appropriate sampling protocol, and the small-scale irrelevant variability it generates, which is the result of the small-scale heterogeneity carried by the constituent of interest in the material to be sampled, is not a simple matter; it involves a necessary theoretical aspect many readers may find quite unfriendly. The sum of the variances of the major components of this small-scale Heterogeneity Fluctuation Error is part of the random variance that is introduced in variography. These variances can be grouped around the random variance to illustrate in a simple way that they all have an important role to play, and it would be a great mistake to overlook any of them. Any source of inflation of the random variance should be a great concern.
