Abstract

Effective management of agricultural data is increasingly vital for research and evidence-based decision-making. Drawing on the authors&s; practical research experiences over a period of 14 years with a focus on computer vision projects, this chapter highlights the importance of managing agricultural image data as an asset. The chapter focuses on the processes, advantages, and limitations of various methods used to collect, store, and analyze data. Illustrating how planning and data collection decisions impact the reliability, accessibility, and interpretability of experimental results. The case study emphasizes real-world scenarios, considerations, and challenges, some of which are unique to agricultural environments. These considerations offer practical insights into planning, data collection, data processing, and data visualization for image data and metadata to facilitate long-term use of a dataset. Ultimately, this chapter aims to share lessons learnt from more than a decade of experience in agricultural image processing to guide the reader in choosing appropriate data management strategies that align with their research goals.
