Abstract

Chapter 9 covers fires-a major source of hazard in the process industries. The various types of fire are briefly discussed followed by a description of the fire triangle and a review of potential ignition sources. The effect of fires on both humans and machinery is then discussed, followed by description and, in some cases, calculation methods for the most common types of fire: pool fires, jet fires, fireballs, boiling liquid expanding vapour explosions (BLEVE) running fires, solid fires and flash fires. An overview of fire detection and protection methods is then provided and the chapter concludes with a section on “What Can Go Wrong?”.
