Abstract

The first stage in conducting a risk assessment is the identification of the magnitude of a release of hazardous material, almost always a liquid or gas. Chapter 7 provides simple calculation methods for the release of fluids at both low and high pressure from an orifice; simple formulas are provided. The potential for evaporation of liquid droplets (Flashing) and evaporation from pools, again with simple formula, is described. Finally, a short section suggests a number of points to check to ensure the calculated release rates are credible.
