Abstract

This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a critical tool in engineering that facilitates the numerical/digital solution of complex problems in the mechanics of materials. By the end of this chapter, students should not only understand the theoretical foundations of FEA but also gain practical insights into its application in engineering practice. The main topics covered in the chapter are the following: Gaining a deep understanding of what FEA is and its significance in modern engineering, Exploring the advantages and limitations of FEA, to appreciate when and how it should be applied, Learning about different types of finite elements, their corresponding applications, and how to choose the appropriate element type for a given problem, Understanding the process of domain discretization and how to effectively subdivide a physical system into finite elements, Becoming familiar with the systematic process involved in FEA, including model idealization, discretization, and analysis, and Developing the ability to derive shape functions and apply different coordinate systems within the FEA framework, and understanding the basic FEA equations.
