Abstract

In this chapter, students will gain an understanding of the foundational governing equations used in finite element analysis (FEA). The chapter will present the direct method for simple structural elements, the formulation of finite element equations for uniaxial bar elements, and the importance of boundary conditions. Additionally, students will explore the analysis of plane truss elements and the application of finite element methods to beam structures. By the end of this chapter, students will be able to Understand the direct method for solving structural mechanics problems using springs, bars, and trusses as basic elements, Derive and apply element equilibrium equations for uniaxial bar elements, Formulate finite element equations for various structural elements using concepts of nodal equilibrium, Compute forces and reactions in systems including built-in beams, subjected to different boundary conditions, and Assemble stiffness matrices for truss elements and solve for unknown displacements in planar truss systems.
