Abstract

This chapter will study stresses. There are two types of stresses, normal stress and shear stress, and the chapter will study both. The scenarios of axial loading and shear loading are specifically addressed in this chapter. Both normal stress and shear stress can occur under axial loading, depending on the orientation of the considered section in the member. The main contents of the chapter are the following: Understanding the meaning of stress, Interpretation of stress as a second-order tensor, not a vector, Two types of stress: normal stress and shear stress, Normal stress in an axially loaded member, Use of axial force diagram in determining the stress distribution in an axially loaded member, Analysis and design of joints, Shear stress and normal stress in bolts, Single shear and double shear, Shear stress in a key, which connects a shaft to a disk, Complementary property of shear stress at a local element in an object, and Stress transformation (determination of the stresses on a section that is inclined to the section on which stresses are known) at a point.
