Abstract

The rapid advancement of electronic systems and quick expansion of wireless communication technologies, including 5G and prospective 6G networks, has intensified the demand for next-generation electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that offer superior efficiency, adaptability and sustainability. This chapter begins with a detailed review of the latest developments in conventional as well as advanced EMI shielding materials, discussing both their strengths and weaknesses. Following this, the chapter explores the technological revolution in advanced materials fabrication, highlighting additive manufacturing, nanocoatings/nanomaterials, smart materials and metamaterials as transformative keys for precision-engineered EMI shielding solutions, and suggests a future course towards realising it. Furthermore, the importance and possibilities of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for precision tuning of existing materials while accelerating the discovery of novel compositions with enhanced functionalities are evaluated. Sustainability considerations, including the development of biodegradable and recyclable composites, modular disassemblable designs and low-carbon-footprint materials, are identified as critical elements in shaping future EMI shielding technologies. By linking advancements in fabrication techniques, computational design and sustainable materials innovation, this chapter presents a comprehensive outlook on the future of EMI shielding, thus presenting a roadmap to address emerging challenges.
