Optimizing Noise Reduction Strategies in Medical Imaging through Advanced Techniques and Performance Evaluation Metrics
Abstract
Smart healthcare relies heavily on high-quality medical imaging to make accurate diagnoses and develop proper treatment plans. However, the noise inherent in medical imaging remains one of the most significant challenges to the effective processing of medical images because most of the useful details are buried deep inside the noise needed for clinical decision-making. This chapter focuses on the optimization of noise reduction techniques: it discusses and evaluates enhanced approaches applied across a range of medical imaging modalities, including MRI, CT, and X-ray. It encompasses classical noise removal techniques that include Gaussian filtering and median filtering, yet advanced solutions, such as wavelet-based techniques and deep learning models Denoising Autoencoders, Generative Adversarial Networks, and hybrid methods that combine wavelet transforms with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Several performance comparisons of the mentioned techniques are carried out with PSNR, SSIM, and VIF metrics. The results indicate that high-performance techniques, particularly deep learning-based methods, provide a significantly better performance in terms of noise suppression while keeping crucial diagnostic features compared to traditional methods. Furthermore, the new advanced methods prove relatively robust for a wide range of noise intensity levels and a broad imaging modality range, making them adaptable for possible clinic applications in smart healthcare settings. By these results, this research study indicates that such powerful techniques in noise reduction are clinically viable despite being computationally intensive and dependent on huge amounts of training data. Hence, optimization of noise reduction strategies could provide improvement in the quality of images as well as in the diagnostic accuracy of various medical imaging modalities towards bettering patient outcomes in healthcare facilities. This chapter forms a major step toward improving the sophistication of noise reduction methods and has immediate implications for improving diagnostics in the smart healthcare era.
