Abstract

In the last decades, the availability of advanced sensors and testing procedures has promoted the development of experimental research on bridges. Associated with static tests, dynamic testing has led, on one side, to the identification of dynamic properties in proof tests, allowing the validation of finite element (FE) models and, on the other side, to the detection of uncomfortable levels of vibration in lively footbridges. In fact, the structural conception of footbridges is often driven by aesthetic requirements so that significant slenderness is attained. Research studies have addressed the subsequent excessive vibration through performance-based serviceability assessment.
