Abstract

Blockchain is rapidly emerging as a foundational trust infrastructure for the built environment, offering new models for project delivery, finance, and sustainability. Key innovations – such as smart contracts, BIM and digital twin integration, and AI-enhanced DAOs – are enabling decentralised, automated, and transparent construction ecosystems. These technologies promise to streamline workflows, enhance collaboration, and reduce long-standing inefficiencies. However, meaningful adoption depends on addressing regulatory uncertainty, the legal recognition of smart contracts, and the lack of interoperable data standards. Without robust governance and compliance frameworks, blockchain risks remaining siloed or unscalable. Its potential extends beyond process optimisation to reshaping how projects are funded and evaluated. Tokenised assets and decentralised finance may democratise investment, while blockchain-enabled carbon tracking, circular material passports, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) auditing support verifiable sustainability claims. With careful implementation and cross-sector collaboration, blockchain offers a pragmatic pathway towards a more resilient, efficient, and transparent construction sector – aligning digital innovation with the imperatives of Construction 4.0 .
