Abstract

In chapter 14 and 15 a new political-economic playing-field has been anticipated. In chapter 16 the old Norwegian concept of dugnad is presented as a third metaphor for the guidance of society towards the transformation for a safer world. Dugnad participation is voluntary. It is driven by the values of fairness, solidarity, reciprocity, and mutuality: “I help you because it is the right thing to do – but also because I expect you to help me in a similar way”. People contribute according to competence and capacity, and they learn in the process. There is room for fun and humor, for food and entertainment. From around the world there are reports about “commoning” experiences, pointing to ever new playing fields. As a metaphor for a new playing field, the dugnad can be combined with commercial activity, or practiced in a secluded space of “derivative sector” guaranteed minimum income. The metaphor contributes to hope, both because of the positive work product, the meaning of activities, social cohesion and belongingness – and much more. Hope is relevant, because we care, because something we love is at stake, and because our activity raises the stakes for something positive and meaningful to emerge.
