Nature Depletion and the 6th Extinction
Abstract
People are threatening the environment, causing the environment to be a threat to humans. We can be specific about many of the environmental threats, even about the costs of mitigation. But considering the full range of needs for mitigation and damage repairs, it is very hard to estimate what it will take. 73 percent of biomass has been lost in the last 60 years. Fresh water and saltwater species are in danger of extinction, and so are living entities in the soil, on ground and in the air – threatening ecosystems and food chains. For hope, we recognize the enormous capacity of nature for recovery and wilding, and for people the latent capacity for more extensive rewilding and area protection.
