Future Directions and Developments in Flower-Based Medicinal and Commercial Applications
Abstract
In society, flowers are valued primarily for their aesthetic qualities rather than their nutritional worth. Comprehensive data on 119 flower species with agri-food and health significance are presented. Information was gathered on their principal chemical compounds, uses in medicine and food, popular names, family, species, and common plant parts. It also included information about the concentration of bioactive chemicals and applications for bioremediation. The present study aims to investigate blooming plants for potential uses as well as health advantages. In this regard, 87% of the flower species under study included some poisonous components that occasionally rendered them inedible; several of these species’ unique molecules have been employed in non-medical applications. 76% can be infused and taken in small amounts. Furthermore, 97% of the examined species have 32% medical applications. Interestingly, a significant gap in the identification of particular molecules of these bioactive chemicals is reported in various literature, and it was found that selected bioactive chemicals have the potential to completely transform the nutraceutical and medical industries by offering state-of-the-art techniques. Hence, there is a need for flower-based exploration towards the development of drugs, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals.
