The impact of precision agriculture on agricultural exports
Abstract
The chapter examines the impact of precision agriculture (PA) adoption on agricultural export growth across BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) from 2010 to 2022. Using a fixed-effects panel regression model, the analysis demonstrates a statistically significant positive relationship between PA adoption and agricultural exports, with each unit increase in the PA Adoption Index corresponding to a USD 18.7 billion rise in export values ( β = 18.7, p = 0.002). The model explains 68.23% of within-country export variation (R² = 0.6823), indicating that PA adoption enhances trade competitiveness through improved productivity and compliance with international standards. Diagnostic tests confirm the robustness of the results, with Hausman tests ( p = 0.021) validating the fixed-effects specification and variance inflation factors (VIFs < 5) ruling out multicollinearity concerns. The findings reveal substantial cross-country heterogeneity, with China and Brazil exhibiting the strongest PA-export linkages due to advanced technological adoption, while India and South Africa show weaker effects, reflecting implementation barriers. These results highlight the importance of targeted agri-tech policies to maximize export potential in emerging economies.
