Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
Artificial intelligence has evolved from Alan Turing’s early thought experiments into the pervasive intelligence powering chatbots, climate dashboards, and edge devices in dairy barns. This chapter charts that transformation, defining AI and tracing its pivotal milestones while unpacking the layered hierarchy of machine learning, deep learning, and generative techniques culminating in today’s large language models (LLMs) such as GPT and Llama. It explores the importance of computational speed, model benchmarking frameworks (MMLU, GPQA, MGSM, MATH, DROP), and the unique challenges of training ESG-aware systems in resource-constrained environments. Practical sections guide readers through fine-tuning a multi-label DistilBERT, constructing a high-performance HNSW index, and implementing Retrieval-Augmented Generation for grounded reasoning. Tooling demonstrations–including prompt-engineering strategies, semantic-kernel orchestration, AutoGen agent workflows, and time-series modeling–illustrate the complete LLM development cycle. By the end, readers will not only understand AI’s conceptual foundations but also gain hands-on insight into transforming intelligent models into sustainable, real-world applications that balance performance, precision, and environmental responsibility.
