Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained popularity due to their extraordinary mechanical and physical properties, making them promising for inclusion in coatings technology in a variety of fields. The chapter aims to present the state-of-the-art in surface modification focused on electrophoretic deposition (EPD) CNT coatings with controlled properties and structure intended to improve the mechanical and antibacterial properties of titanium and its alloys to apply in endoprosthesis technology. Characterization of topography, morphology, mechanical behavior, corrosion resistance, wettability, and biological behavior of EPD CNT coatings is reviewed, and the impact on the structure and mechanical properties of nanostructure additions and laser modification of such coatings, making them appropriate for use in the biomedical field, is presented. However, there are some challenges, such as assumed weak adhesion strength to titanium and its alloys and cytotoxicity of CNT coatings, which are discussed in the chapter, and methods to overcome them are proposed.
