Abstract

This chapter presents fundamental, advanced and empirical geotechnical engineering methods that are crucial for coastal development, such as constructing port and airport facilities by land reclamation on soft seabeds. The contents of this chapter can be divided into two parts: the former part of this chapter introduces a predictive approach for consolidation settlement from primary consolidation to secondary consolidation including a technique for estimating long-term consolidation settlement beyond conventional consolidation theory. This part also focuses on a method for forecasting differential settlement through the construction data analysis. The latter part of this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of ground improvement techniques for soft ground underlying principles and practical applications. In addition, integration of these ground improvement techniques is introduced through looking back at a case of a large-scale manmade island for an airport facility.
