Abstract

The history of carbonated soft drinks dates back to the late 1700s, when seltzer, soda, and other waters were first commercially produced. The early carbonated drinks were believed to be effective against certain illnesses such as putrid fevers, dysentery, and bilious vomiting. In particular, quinine tonic water was used in the 1850s to protect British forces abroad from malaria.
