Abstract

The intensive discharge of industrial effluents in an uncontrolled way causes environmental risks that are challenging to manage with or get rid of in the long run, especially as they exhibit broad-spectrum toxicity, persistence, and the long-distance transmission, which make them difficult and sometimes almost impossible to control. Therefore, many physical and chemical remediation approaches have been used, but their adverse outcomes have led to an increase in the proportions of secondary and toxic by-products using expensive and short-term detoxification techniques. However, green, economical, rapidly evolving approach was harnessed to eliminate pollutants from various ecosystems either aquatic or terrestrial, which is bioremediation. Herein, the microbial remediation of various organic pollutants would be handled. Different microbial groups under different aeration conditions in either single pure culture or mixed cultures, which exhibited a prominent degradation performance, would be listed. Moreover, we shed light on the recent technologies that enhanced the degradative capacity of microbes.
