Challenges and Future Directions in Supercapacitor Research
Abstract
Supercapacitors (SCs) have emerged as highly efficient energy storage systems due to their exceptional power density, long cycle life, and rapid charge–discharge capabilities. However, their broader adoption is limited by challenges such as low energy density, high material costs, recycling difficulties, and performance degradation over prolonged use. This chapter presents a comprehensive analysis of the key obstacles facing SC technology, focusing on issues related to research costs, electrode and electrolyte materials, and overall device design. It also emphasizes the importance of developing sustainable and cost-effective fabrication methods and explores the integration of SCs with other storage technologies—particularly batteries in electric vehicles (EVs)—to meet the growing demand for efficient energy storage. Future research directions are discussed, including the use of advanced nanomaterials, hybrid systems, and innovative electrode architectures. The chapter highlights the promising role of SCs in next-generation energy systems, with applications spanning EVs, portable electronics, renewable energy storage, and smartphones. By addressing current limitations and exploring emerging innovations, this chapter offers valuable insights into the evolving field of SC technology and its potential to meet global energy challenges.
