Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing water management by providing innovative solutions to longstanding challenges such as water scarcity, inefficient irrigation, pollution, and disaster vulnerability. This chapter examines the successful deployment of AI technologies—including machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing (RS), and geographic information systems (GIS)—across diverse applications like irrigation optimization, drought and flood forecasting, groundwater monitoring, and watershed planning. Case studies reveal that AI-driven systems have improved resource efficiency, reduced water consumption by up to 40%, enhanced disaster preparedness, and boosted crop productivity and farmer incomes. Despite these achievements, barriers related to data quality, affordability, infrastructure readiness, and policy frameworks persist. The chapter emphasizes future research priorities, including AI integration with climate models, the role of Big Data and cloud computing, and the need for robust policy and institutional support. By bridging technological innovation with sustainable governance, AI holds immense potential to ensure water security, resilience, and socioeconomic sustainability in the face of accelerating climate change.
