Application of Machine Learning Techniques Predicated on Extensive Datasets for the Forecasting of Wastewater Quality
Abstract
Driven by increasing urbanisation, industrial growth, and environmental challenges, wastewater management has emerged as a significant global issue. The preservation of ecological balance and the assurance of safe water resources depend on the efficient monitoring and forecasting of wastewater quality. However, conventional methods of assessing water quality may be inadequate due to the vast quantity and complexity of data generated by modern treatment facilities, industrial locations, and environmental monitoring stations. In this context, the unification of machine learning (ML) and data analytics presents a transformative solution that enables accuracy, efficiency, and a scalable prototype. This chapter explores the application of ML techniques to large datasets for predicting wastewater quality. Advanced algorithms such as supervised learning, unsupervised neural networks enable pattern identification, connections, and anomalies in complex data that traditional models cannot detect. The ML models provide valuable insights for improving wastewater management through real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and optimisation of treatment processes. Additionally, significant challenges such as data preparation, managing skewed datasets, and ensuring model interpretability are addressed. Through the early detection of pollution events and enhancements in the efficiency of wastewater treatment facilities, case studies and practical applications will demonstrate the tangible benefits of ML in predicting wastewater quality. Furthermore, the chapter emphasises forthcoming advancements in ,; technology and their potential to revolutionise the field of water quality monitoring. The integration of extensive data analysis and advanced algorithms will enhance the precision, sustainability, and adaptability of wastewater management to address future environmental challenges.
