Abstract

This chapter examines the essential function of artificial intelligence (AI) policy in tackling the interrelated global challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and energy shortage. It emphasises how AI’s proficiency in data processing, predictive analytics, and automation can transform agriculture, optimise renewable energy, and improve disaster management. It underscores the imperative for strong regulatory frameworks to guarantee ethical development, reduce dangers, and foster fair access to AI technologies. The chapter analyses AI applications in several domains, such as precision agriculture, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and efficient energy systems. It illustrates AI’s capabilities through instances, such as DeepMind’s energy optimisation in data centres, IBM’s Watson Decision Platform for Agriculture, and AI-enhanced weather forecasting. It emphasises that inadequate legislation can intensify existing disparities, raise issues about data misuse and algorithmic prejudice, and may favour profit-driven solutions over fair access. The chapter emphasises the essential requirement for regulations that include data privacy, openness, accountability, and the encouragement of innovation in accordance with global sustainability goals. It references the European Union’s AI Act and the OECD’s AI Principles as exemplars of frameworks for the ethical development and application of AI. The abstract asserts that a policy-driven strategy is essential for guaranteeing that AI developments are effective, inclusive, and promote a sustainable future, highlighting the significance of international and intersectoral collaboration.
