Emerging Opportunities and Threats in the Digital Revolution in the Water Sector
Abstract
Around two billion people worldwide live in water scarcity conditions, with at least four billion facing severe water scarcity every month. In 2030, around 700 million people will be displaced due to water scarcity. With the emergence of international organizations such as WHO and UNESCO, efforts to save the water sector are now global. Seawater desalination technologies and water recycling systems were developed to address water scarcity in various regions. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6 is clean water and adequate sanitation. Technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence are developing rapidly. Both technologies have changed how we view, control, and optimize water use in many industries. Sensor systems and IoT devices connected to the network can be subject to cyberattacks that could disrupt water supplies or even manipulate water quality data; that is why we need cybersecurity.
