Abstract

Water sustainability remains a pressing global challenge, driven by rapid urbanization, agricultural expansion, and climate change. This study explores the transformative role of the Internet of Things (IoT) in addressing these challenges by enabling real-time water management, optimizing resource use, and supporting sustainable practices across diverse sectors. Through case studies across different climates, the adaptability and scalability of IoT technologies are demonstrated, showcasing significant improvements in water efficiency, resource monitoring, and waste reduction. IoT applications in agriculture are examined, where smart irrigation systems improve water usage, reducing waste and enhancing crop yields. Additionally, urban water management benefits from IoT-enabled systems that support circular economy principles, enabling water reuse and recovery. The study also addresses the ethical considerations of IoT adoption, such as equitable access and data privacy, along with the critical role of policy frameworks in fostering widespread IoT integration. Emerging trends in artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology are discussed, underscoring their potential to enhance IoT-based water management. The findings highlight IoT as a pivotal technology for advancing water sustainability, provided that regulatory, ethical, and financial barriers are addressed. This research contributes to the understanding of IoT’s potential in building resilient and sustainable water management systems, aligned with global sustainability objectives.
