Abstract

Water scarcity is a major challenge in arid and semi-arid regions, driven by agricultural expansion, economic growth, population increases, and climate change. Over the last century, rising water extraction has exacerbated this global environmental concern. Social and climatic changes are expected to intensify water scarcity in the coming decades. Big Data technology offers significant potential for addressing these challenges by leveraging vast datasets characterized by high volume, velocity, diversity, and validity. Advancements in high-resolution remote sensing and smart information systems have enabled Big Data to play a vital role in water management, including smart water systems, energy management, and drought forecasting. These technologies support data-driven discovery, process optimization, and informed decision-making. The ability to process large, complex datasets in real time is crucial for applications such as early drought warnings. Traditional methods are inadequate for handling the growing volume and variety of data, requiring innovative approaches to information processing and analytics. While theoretical knowledge about water scarcity remains incomplete, Big Data offers opportunities to bridge gaps through data-driven discovery. This chapter highlights the role of Big Data in drought and water scarcity forecasting, emphasizing the benefits of improved data accessibility and predictive analytics for advancing research and mitigation strategies.
