Promoting Sustainable Agriculture with Drones in Rural Areas
Abstract
Technological advancements in agriculture—particularly the use of drones—have opened new horizons for increasing productivity, optimizing resource use, and achieving sustainable farming. However, in rural and underprivileged areas, the adoption and effective utilization of such technologies require careful attention to social, cultural, and educational contexts. This chapter focuses on the socio-cultural requirements and considerations, analyzing the critical roles of cultural factors, indigenous knowledge, social norms, and local trust in the acceptance of drone technology. Additionally, it explores the educational challenges in these regions—including low literacy levels, lack of educational and digital infrastructure, and linguistic and communication barriers—as major obstacles to the effective promotion of such innovations. Drawing on theories of innovation diffusion, adult education, and participatory learning, the chapter proposes strategies for designing educational programs tailored to local conditions and the real needs of farmers. The main objective is to emphasize the necessity of a localized, context-sensitive approach to promoting agricultural technologies, and to present a framework for the effective deployment of drones in empowering rural communities and advancing sustainable agriculture at the local level.
