Abstract

Animation layers are one of Maya's most powerful, yet often misunderstood tools. They allow animators to non-destructively adjust motion, test variations, and refine performances without ruining previous work. When used properly, animation layers provide the flexibility to iterate quickly and make adjustments that would otherwise require reanimating large portions of a shot. However, novice animators often misuse layers, either stacking too many or failing to manage blending properly. In this chapter, we'll demystify animation layers, showing when and how to use them efficiently to enhance your workflow, not complicate it.
