Abstract

This chapter explores the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, revealing a rapidly evolving threat landscape in which AI is no longer a tool exclusive to defenders but a powerful asset in the hands of cyber adversaries. By leveraging large language models (LLMs) and machine learning techniques, attackers can now automate reconnaissance, mutate malware payloads, conduct vulnerability analysis, and execute highly personalized social engineering attacks at scale. Unlike traditional threats, AI-powered attacks are dynamic, adaptive, and often evade signature-based detection systems, making them uniquely difficult to identify and mitigate. Real-world use cases demonstrate how generative AI tools are used to bypass authentication mechanisms, craft deepfake audio for vishing campaigns, and automate phishing via clone websites that mimic corporate branding. The chapter highlights tools like NodeGoat for vulnerability testing, PyInstaller for binary generation, and Mip22 for phishing infrastructure, illustrating how AI lowers the technical barrier to advanced threat execution. Furthermore, it showcases the capabilities of platforms like Media.io and Echovox in voice cloning, and Robin and OnionMapper in AI-based dark web OSINT. While the weaponization of AI is concerning, the chapter also calls for ethical development and AI literacy, proposing countermeasures such as red-teaming frameworks, prompt monitoring, Zero Trust Architectures, and real-time anomaly detection. Ultimately, it urges collaboration among governments, academia, and cybersecurity firms to pre-emptively combat the rise of AI-powered cybercrime and secure digital infrastructures before autonomous threats outpace defensive innovation.
