Choosing a Rational Dosage Form for Herbal Drugs
Abstract
Herbal formulations have been a cornerstone of traditional healing practices for centuries, but with the increasing interest in their therapeutic potential, there has been a significant shift toward their use in modern medicine. However, despite their widespread use, the formulation of herbal drugs into appropriate dosage forms remains a complex challenge due to the variability in active constituents, pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic effects. Herbal material should be incorporated in a suitable formulation in order to achieve uniform dosing, better patient compatibility, stability, and maximum therapeutic response. A deeper understanding of the multicomponent plant material and formulation approaches has to be established. A wide variety of conventional as well as novel formulation options for the incorporation of plant constituents were extensively reported. This chapter provides a comprehensive guide for selecting rational dosage forms for herbal drugs, considering aspects such as bioavailability, stability, patient compliance, manufacturing constraints, safety, and effectiveness.
