Abstract

Phytomedicines, derived from traditional medicinal plants, are increasingly recognized as safe, effective, and sustainable alternatives to synthetic drugs, steadily integrating into modern healthcare. This chapter explores their evolution from historical use to commercialization, detailing their rigorous development from plant selection to clinical trials. The global phytomedicine market, valued at approximately $40 billion in 2022, is projected to reach around $70 billion by 2030, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 7.2%, underscoring its therapeutic potential and commercial success. Case studies, such as artemisinin, curcumin, and silymarin, exemplify their applications and market acceptance. The chapter also addresses various formulation approaches and challenges in marketing and distribution, including the sustainability of raw materials and competition with synthetic drugs. By examining these factors, this chapter provides a comprehensive understanding of the potential of phytomedicines to address unmet medical needs.
