Identification, Standardization, and Quality Control of Herbal Preparations
Abstract
Herbal preparations, commonly known as phytomedicines, have gained global recognition due to their properties, including their natural occurrence, superior therapeutic efficacy, and minimal to no side effects. . However, their complexity and variability in composition pose noteworthy hurdles in their identification, standardization, and quality control, which are major parameters for ensuring their safety, efficacy, and reproducibility. This chapter examines the key methodologies and techniques used in identifying and standardizing phytomedicines, highlighting the role of advanced analytical tools, including chromatography, spectroscopy, and molecular methods. Quality control protocols, including good manufacturing practices (GMP) and pharmacopeial standards, have been discussed in this chapter to address issues like adulteration, contamination, and batch-to-batch variations. Combining different approaches and techniques further enhances the reliability of herbal product analysis. Additionally, the regulatory framework and its role in promoting global harmonization are highlighted, thereby ensuring consumer trust and facilitating international trade. Despite advancements, challenges such as limited standard reference materials and variability in raw materials persist, necessitating ongoing research and innovation to address these issues. This comprehensive overview highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in establishing robust frameworks for identifying, standardizing, and ensuring the quality control of herbal preparations, thereby supporting their safe and effective use in modern healthcare systems.
