Radical-based Redox Polymers for Rechargeable Batteries
Abstract
A scientific challenge that researchers are tackling today involves the creation of revolutionary, high-capacity rechargeable batteries tailored for electric vehicles and the upcoming array of portable devices. These advanced energy storage systems are indispensable for a more promising future for humanity, as they are compatible with energy sustainability, ecological balance, and climate stability. In recent years, radical-based redox polymers have become a unique and diverse class of materials with high potential for use in renewable energy systems. The organic redox-active polymers allow for the free and flexible design and modification of chemical structures, resulting in a diverse range of organic substances. Stable organic radicals are incorporated into the polymeric backbone of these polymers as redox-active centres, which facilitate effective electron transfer with excellent electrochemical performance. The inherent flexibility of the polymer matrix enables the development of electrodes with outstanding physical properties. This chapter explores recent advancements in radical polymers and redox-active polymers based on heteroatoms with superior rate capability and cyclic stabilities in rechargeable batteries. It also outlines the underlying design principles with examples of innovative redox polymers.
