Abstract

Bio-based nanoemulsions are used in the food industry as preservatives owing to their natural, safe, and eco-friendly nature to synthetic additives. They are mostly derived from essential oils, plant extracts, and biodegradable polymers with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. They help to improve the nutritional and sensory properties of food products while aligning with consumer demand for clean labels without leaving out environmental sustainability and efficacy. The comparative advantages of bio-based nanoemulsions over synthetic preservatives are discussed in this chapter. In addition, safety superiority, efficacy, and minimal ecological footprint are emphasized. Bio-based nanoemulsions are faced with challenges such as high-cost production, complex regulatory issues, and doubts from consumers. To overcome these setbacks, novel strategies involving integrating artificial intelligence in the optimization of the formulations, use of low energy emulsification techniques, and improving collaboration networks between industry and regulators are needed. In addition, hybrid nanoemulsion which combines an advanced delivery system offers a promising chance for functionality enhancements. Future research can focus on scalability of the green manufacture techniques, valorization of agricultural byproducts for nanoemulsion fabrication, and incorporation of intelligent sensing technologies for real-time monitoring in the food systems. By addressing these challenges, bio-based nanoemulsion can provide a sustainable and innovative solution to global food security as a food preservative. This chapter advocates for investment in emerging technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration to make the full potential of bio-based nanoemulsion as a food preservative in food industry fully achieved.
