Abstract

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element in agriculture, playing a crucial role as a primary nutrient for the growth and development of plants. Fertilisers are necessary for preserving soil fertility and achieving optimal crop yields, making them a vital constituent. The typical utilisation of P presents notable environmental difficulties, such as the eutrophication of aquatic bodies resulting from the runoff originating from agricultural areas. The main goal of this chapter is to examine the regulatory structures that govern the sustainable recycling of P. Regulations are essential in directing the progress and execution of recycling processes. Various global rules and agreements are in place to encourage the sustainable recycling of P. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations prioritize sustainable resource management, with a specific focus on P. The European Union has enacted several directives, including the Waste Framework Directive and the Water Framework Directive, with the aim of fostering recycling and mitigating nutrient contamination. Various legislative strategies can be employed to govern the process of recycling. Enforced regulations, such as the necessity to extract phosphorus from wastewater, can incentivize the implementation of recycling technologies. The European Union (EU) has established an extensive regulatory framework for the recycling of P. P recycling can be improved using innovative regulatory techniques and technologies. Market-based instruments, such as tradable licences, offer flexibility and cost-effectiveness in meeting recycling goals.
