Role of robotics in smart agricultural applications
Abstract
Robot technologies are increasingly redefining agricultural practices by addressing labour shortages, optimizing resource utilization, and advancing sustainable food production. The global market for agri-robotics, valued at USD 13.5 billion in 2022, is projected to reach USD 40.1 billion by 2030 with a CAGR of 12.3%, driven by the demand for precision farming and AI-enabled automation. In developed economies such as the United States and EU, over 35% of large-scale farms have integrated UAVs and AGVs for crop monitoring and soil assessment, while adoption in emerging regions is expanding at a growth rate of 15% annually due to increasing accessibility of low-cost IoT-enabled solutions. Robotic applications span precision seeding, automated weeding, nutrient monitoring, and robotic harvesting, with evidence suggesting that automation reduces chemical input use by up to 30% and improves crop yield forecasting accuracy by 25%. Moreover, robotic milking systems have achieved penetration rates of 40% in Northern Europe, contributing to higher productivity and improved livestock welfare. Despite these advancements, challenges persist, including interoperability of heterogeneous systems, high capital investments, and ethical concerns regarding rural employment. Future research emphasizes multi-robot coordination, energy-efficient designs, and integration with climate-smart agricultural strategies to ensure resilience and sustainability in global food systems.
