Transforming agriculture through intelligent and sustainable architectures
Abstract
Global agriculture must confront the twin challenge of feeding nearly 10 billion people by 2050 while addressing the impacts of climate change, biodiversity decline, and resource scarcity. Innovative intelligent agricultural architectures—encompassing Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT), digital twins, nanotechnology, and agrivoltaics—are emerging as key enablers of sustainable intensification. This chapter explores how these technologies, when combined with ecological practices, can drive precision, resilience, and sustainability in farming. Practical applications include AIoT-enabled irrigation and yield forecasting, robotic platforms for targeted weeding, hybrid frameworks that bridge connectivity limitations, nanosensors for early stress detection, and agrivoltaic systems that integrate crop production with renewable energy generation. Evidence from India and China illustrates the growing role of AI-powered smart farming in boosting productivity, optimizing resource use, and enhancing food security. Beyond individual tools, system-level sustainability approaches and agroecological synergies highlight the importance of holistic design. Achieving large-scale impact will require supportive policies, global governance mechanisms, and farmer capacity building. By aligning advanced digital innovations with ecological stewardship, intelligent agricultural architectures offer a viable pathway toward climate-smart, resource-efficient, and inclusive food systems.
