Abstract

This chapter deals with the prospect of robotics and automation in agri-food systems where the utilization of state-of-the-art technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, and robotics is used to improve the productivity, sustainability, and resource efficiency in agriculture. Thought leadership is given to new ways of precision farming: use of autonomous robots and artificial intelligence-based systems in crop management and pest control, and the Internet of Things in real-time data gathering and analysis. Thise chapter also discusses challenges of modern farming, including the concern for creating sustainable agricultural methods like the no-input system or vertical farming, facilitated through the use of auto systems. Stressing the overloaded cooperation of people and robots, it focuses on the ways that automation expands rather than displaces work. In addition, it discusses the implications of automation for ethical concerns about jobs and related issues, and the equity of smallholders’ access. Last, it outlines a vision of adaptable and sustainable agri-food systems that will be in a position to meet future food security challenges in the absence of compromising environmental health.
