Abstract

Riverscapes are intricate, large-scale networks of interconnected river and stream habitats, situated within diverse ecological and socioeconomic contexts. Changes in riverscapes occur due to both natural and human-induced factors, influencing ecological, economic, and social dimensions. River ecosystems are increasingly recognized as dynamic landscapes that fluctuate in size, extent, and configuration in response to variations in water discharge. In recent years, there has been a notable rise in flood-related damage caused by extreme weather events, such as torrential rainfall, which significantly alters riverscapes. Numerous reports worldwide highlight these impacts, including bridge failures due to river flooding. One of the primary causes of bridge structural failure affecting piers, abutments, and other components in alluvial channels—is local scour around bridge piers. Additionally, engineering structures such as bridges, dams, culverts, and urban development substantially modify stream geometry, hydro-sediment flow dynamics, and the surrounding physical environment. Over time, these interventions exacerbate channel degradation processes, leading to long-term deterioration of river systems. The construction of dams to regulate river flow often leaves many floodplains isolated and disconnected. Additionally, the natural complexity and integrity of floodplain networks have been significantly disrupted by human activities such as the construction of revetments for transportation, gravel mining, channelization, and expansion of agricultural and urban areas. This pattern of human settlement along floodplains, to varying degrees, has been observed worldwide, leading to widespread alteration of river ecosystems.
