Abstract

The use of geospatial technologies, such as geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, and Global Positioning System (GPS), are increasingly vital tools in tackling climate change and managing environmental issues. This chapter explores into how these tools are utilized to observe, analyse, and mitigate climate-related impacts. By using remote sensing, we can extensively monitor large-scale environmental changes like deforestation and rising sea levels, by providing timely data for policy and decision-making. GIS serves a key function in identifying climate risks, including urban heat islands and flood-prone coastal zones, delivering important insights for effective urban planning and adaptation strategies. Spatial technologies greatly enhance precision agriculture, as GIS and GPS enable farmers to optimize resource use and minimize emissions through climate-smart practices. The chapter further explores how GIS supports the deployment of renewable energy by identifying optimal locations for wind and solar farms, contributing to the transition towards cleaner energy sources. Additionally, the challenges of integrating large datasets and ethical concerns surrounding spatial data usage are addressed, along with future advancements such as artificial intelligence and machine learning that will further enhance these technologies. By showcasing practical applications across various sectors, this chapter highlights the critical role spatial technologies play in creating more resilient and sustainable systems in the face of climate change.
