Neuro-Phytopharmaceutical Applications of Shatavari
Abstract
The adaptogenic and neuroprotective properties of the Ayurvedic herb Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) are attracting more and more attention from scientists who are interested in its effects on neurological health. With its abundance of bioactive components like alkaloids, flavonoids, and steroidal saponins, Shatavari has powerful anti-inflammatory, neurotransmitter-modulating, and antioxidant capabilities. Because of its pharmacological effects, it may be useful in treating neurodegenerative diseases associated with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and abnormalities in neurotransmitters, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s. In addition to regulating cortisol and improving serotonin, dopamine, and GABAergic activity, it has anxiolytic and antidepressant properties, making it a promising option for the management of stress, anxiety, and depression. Its practical implementation is hindered by issues such as inconsistent formulations, low blood–brain barrier penetration, and inadequate bioavailability, despite its promise. To improve its bioavailability and focused central nervous system administration, researchers have recently investigated innovative drug delivery vehicles, such as phytosomes, nanoparticles, and liposomes. There is still a need for more research on how to standardize Shatavari-based formulations and ensure they comply with regulatory criteria. This chapter offers a thorough synopsis of the neurophytopharmaceutical uses of Shatavari, including its action mechanisms, therapeutic advantages, and new approaches to formulation. Shatavari is a natural neuroprotective substance that is showing great promise as a method for treating neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases, thanks to recent research and clinical validation.
