Abstract

Shatavari, often called the ‘Queen of Herbs,’ has long been a key ingredient in various formulations in Ayurveda aimed at treating disorders of the urinary system. It is traditionally known as a diuretic or Mutravirechaneeya herb. However, scientific studies validating this property are limited. Interestingly, the herb’s diuretic effects are believed to play a crucial role in other well-researched properties, such as its anti-urolithiasis and anti-cystitis effects. The only scientific study conducted on Wistar rats indicates moderate diuretic activity, accompanied by urinary loss of potassium, phosphorus, and chloride. This chapter seeks to evaluate the diuretic potential of Shatavari and hypothesize the possible mechanisms behind this effect, based on the composition of its extracts. The future of Shatavari as a diuretic depends on a clearer understanding of responsible active components. Recent in silico research on isolated components offers promising prospects for a comprehensive evaluation of Shatavari as a herbal diuretic.
